I'm ALL FOR National Sales Tax!!
I am all for a national sales tax, as long as the tax rate is within reason. Let's look at it this way; a man makes $1 million in a year. To maintain the style of living that he wants, he will buy a $700,000 home and a $60,000 car (his wife is driving a BMW which is also $60,000), he will have nice cloths, a membership to a golf course, and take a vacation or 2 with his wife and kids each year. So on all that he has spent throughout the year, he has paid, let's say, 10% sales tax. Since he has the money to spend, he will spend what he needs to to maintain his style of living that he and his family are accustomed to.
Man number 2- he works for man number 1 as a delivery man. He makes $35,000 a year. He can only afford a new Kia at $12000, his wife works also so he can afford a older house that is about $100,000. He shops at Walmart and can take his family to Waterworld once or twice a summer. He is not rich, but since he lives within his means, he is able to pay all his bills each month and have enough left over to save a little for his kids college. He also pays 10% on everything he buys, but since he lives within his means, he doesn't go broke.
So the difference in what each man pays in sales tax is relative to their income and life style. As long as you live within your means, a sales tax is fair for everyone because you get taxed on what you spend, and the more you make, the more you will spend.
I would say that certain items should be exempt, such as medicines and services such as doctors and services for the handicapped.
